What will be the impact of the recent Supreme Court rulings on campaign finance (Davis case) and the DC gun ban (Heller case)? Do you agree with the Court majority's rationale? Why or why not?

The campaign finance ruling is simply going to make it more difficult for "non-super wealthy" candidates to compete. This ruling will guarantee that Mitt Romney is the nominee in a few years!
However, the best way to figure out the case rationale is to actually read the majority opinion. The Davis campaign finance case will likely cause contributions and the laws concerning them to be closely scrutinized in the current election.
As for the Heller case, it is of note that this is the first case in US history to directly contest whether or not the Second Amendment applies to individuals or the military only. With events like the VTech massacre and other shooting incidents, it seems likely that the Second Amendment will continue to be contested between the NRA and various anti-gun NPOs.
I'll look up information on the campaign finance case, but the Heller case is going to lead to the repeal of bans on weapons (self-defense) in major cities around the country. I am not sure what to make of the decision - clearly, the bans don't work well anyway as there are gangs with guns in every city. It will be interesting to see if state and local governments respond with stricter regulations/permit processes/definitions of acceptable weapons, as opposed to bans. And who is going to distinguish between a gang and a "militia"? I am interested in finding this out, so hopefully, I'll get back to this
Students in the AP Government & Politics class are encouraged to increase their dialogue outside of class through this blog. Hopefully, this will help wrap up some class discussions and also provide launching points for subsequent classes. Be careful what you write (still a good idea to think before you express yourself) and avoid personal attacks. So that I can monitor participation, please sign your name and/or provide me with your codename. Thanks.

Since information is hard to find on Davis v FEC but avoiding sever legal jargon, here's a good website to explain part of the background of the case:
